Mt. Takao (January 4th)

A Happy New Year! Drinking Sake at Mt. Takao. The image on the wooden cup is this year's zodiac sign, mouse.

Today we went to Mt. Takao to see any frost flowers there. There were lots of people visiting to pray for a happy new year. The sky was pretty clear and we saw Mt. Fuji from the top of the mountain, too. On the way to Icchou-daira we found lots of frost flowers, which are actually frosts made from the water contained in the stems of Keiskea japanica (Shimobashira) when the stem breaks and the water pops out to the cold air. Their shapes were so interesting that we took many many pictures of them.

Ice candles on the trail...In Japanese this is called Shimobashira, which is the same as the name of the plant above.
